Our Veterinarians’ Bios

Scott Shuler

Veterinarian Scott ShulerI grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University for both undergraduate and veterinary school. After graduating from vet school in 1999, my soon-to-be wife and classmate, Carrie Fleming, and I moved to Portland and immediately fell in love with the city. I worked in downtown Portland for five years, and then Carrie and I decided to move to Atlanta, so she could pursue a fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the meantime, I worked at a very progressive practice that allowed me to hone my medical and surgical skills. We also added two boys to the family, which already included our dogs, Dolly and Mesa, and our cats, Smokey and Sketchy. When Carrie completed her fellowship, we looked at dozens of practices. NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital was the perfect fit. After returning to Portland, we lost both dogs and Smokey. In 2010, we visited the Oregon Humane Society and added a cat named Scooby-Doo and a hound dog named Hank to our family.

I adore all aspects of my job, especially educating clients on their animal’s health. My special areas of interest are surgery and geriatric care. In my spare time, I enjoy playing with my kids – two and four-legged – hiking, camping, and fishing.

Carrie Fleming

Veterinarian Carrie FlemingDr. Shuler and I are excited and honored to be caring for your pets. Portland became our home in 1999 after we completed our doctorates in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. I started my career at a 24-hour emergency facility and quickly realized I missed the relationships that general family medicine could provide. While practicing at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital in Beaverton, I completed my master's in Public Health from Oregon Health Sciences University. I was accepted into the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. In Spring 2008, we came home to Portland to take ownership of NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital. I have a strong interest in promoting preventative medicine and overall health and wellness for our four-legged family members.

Our family has changed quite a bit since returning to Portland including the addition of Scooby-Doo, a 6-year-old orange tabby, and Hank, a 1-year-old hound mix.

Colleen Flaherty

Colleen FlahertyI grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York with a childhood full of snowball fights and family pets. I obtained my degree in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 2004 and spent my first few years as a veterinarian in Western Massachusetts until I could no longer ignore the call of the West and relocated to Portland.

I am happy to call Portland home and consider myself fortunate to be a part of the amazing team at NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital. I enjoy working closely with clients to foster happy, healthy bonds with their pets and I have a special interest in preventative medicine, client education, soft tissue surgery, and sports medicine. In addition to general practice, I like to assist Guide Dogs, the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, and Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association’s (HSVMA) Field Services.

My life outside of the veterinary hospital is filled with cyclo-cross racing, telemark skiing, do-it-yourself projects, and road trips in our Volkswagen campervan, “Betty.” My four-legged friends are Yonkers, a guide dog flunky, and Blister, a barn cat turned couch potato.

Becky Prull

Colleen FlahertyI grew up in Colorado, and graduated from Colorado State University with my veterinary degree in 2005. During veterinary school, I participated in an internship in wildlife rehabilitation, which sparked my interest in treating reptiles and small mammals. Shortly after graduation, I completed a rigorous medical acupuncture course earning my certification in veterinary acupuncture. I am proud to be able to include this healing modality in my comprehensive "toolbox".

Integrative, or "complementary", medicine is a focus of mine. This approach allows me to utilize all of my available resources to better care for my patients. Often times, my treatments are western medicine based, but herbal medications, diet, or acupuncture frequently become part of my plan.

I adore being a veterinarian. Besides my integrative and exotic medicine background, I also have a strong interest in dentistry, internal medicine and behavior. I have an adorable ex-laboratory cat named Finky, and we share my NE Portland home with my little running buddy, my adopted mix-breed dog, Goblin.
